We are recruiting!

19.10.22

South London Sinfonia is now recruiting new members, across strings generally, and we need 2 permanent bassoonists and a 1st horn player.

Since it was founded, South London Sinfonia has allowed enthusiastic amateurs with a range of abilities to enjoy making music together.

There is no audition, but players need to be a minimum of Grade 5 standard. The orchestra has played a wide variety of music in recent years, including Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony No.3, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor with rising star Sharon Zhou, and Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture.

New Leader

19.10.22

South London Sinfonia has just recruited a new leader, civil servant and violinist Matt O'Dowd. Matt lived in China for six years, where he played in the Shanghai City Symphony Orchestra under conductor Cao Peng, and was the leader of the Beijing International Chamber Orchestra from 2017 to 2018. Now back in the UK, Matt leads a secondary school youth choir at his local church, plays viola and piano, and writes contemporary religious music.

Matt has stepped into the role after our previous leader, Margaret Hawkins, stepped down. Margaret has led the orchestra since 2002, and we are enormously grateful to her hard work over the past twenty years.
